Wuling Forest Recreation Area
Hidden deep inside Wuling Farm, the hymn of the forest composed with red maples, pine forest, waterfalls, and Taiwan Landlocked Masu Salmon, captures the most fascinating image of Wuling National Forest Recreation Area.
This is the third national forest recreational area in Taiwan, and about a 4-hour drive from Taipei. The elevation is approximately 1,800 meters. Due to the cold air descending from the high mountains, the temperature here is colder than one might think. The most representative scenic spot is perhaps the magnificent “Taoshan Waterfall” at the end of the Taoshan Trail, veiled behind the astonishing mist created by the fall.
Taoshan Trail is also the entry point to Taoshan and Chihyoushan, two of the 100 Peaks of Taiwan. The Taiwan Red Pines spread along the trail make a brilliant scenic tour. The rich ecology is also one of the main features: Formosan Muntjac, Taiwan macaque, Mikado Pheasant, Swinhoe’s Pheasant and Vinaceous Rosefinch are common dwellers here. Standing and looking down from the Wuling Suspension Bridge, you’ll also be able to see live national treasures in the Cijiawan River, the Taiwan Landlocked Masu Salmon! The Taiwan Red Maple and Green Maple in autumn, as well as cherry blossoms in spring, are the splendid seasonal wonders of Wuling National Forest Recreation Area that one should not miss when visiting Wuling!

Cijiawan River

The clear waters of Cijiawan River serve as a habitat to one of Taiwan's most precious fish species—the Formosan Landlocked Salmon. A rare survivor of the ice age, the Formosan Landlocked Salmon can only live in alpine forest rivers with an abundant supply of clean water and temperatures lower than 16oC. Since its disappearance from the overdeveloped Dajia River, the Formosan Landlocked Salmon is only found today in the upstream portions of the Cijiawan River.

Taoshan Waterfall
Source 臺中分署
Taoshan Waterfall is located at the headwaters of Cijiawan River. On the 4.5-kilometer forest trail leading up to the falls from Wuling Villa, visitors pass through Taiwanese Red Pines and can listen to the pleasant songs of birds. Several dozen avian species can be sighted along the way, making this a popular birding trail. The trail ends at Taoshan Waterfall. The falls cascades down from an impressive height of 80 meters, giving off a thunderous roar as it makes its descent. In spring, the water descends with particular force, enveloping the area in a light mist.

Wuling Suspension Bridge
Source 臺中分署
One of the best vantage points for viewing the Formosan Landlocked Salmon is from the Wuling Suspension Bridge spanning the Cijiawan River. However, binoculars are still recommended. On the other side of the bridge is a small path leading through dense growths of Red Cypress, Cryptomeria, Taiwanese Red Pine, Taiwanese Alder and an undergrowth of Chinese Gugertree, Bayberry, and Rhododendron noriakianum.
