Fusing District, Taoyuan City
Dongyanshan National Forest Recreation Area
Roaming amidst the orderly, gorgeous Cryptomeria (Japanese cedar) forest in the clouds, you can overlook the view spanning from Taoyuan to the Greater Taipei area as you climb to the peak of Dongyanshan (East Eye Mountain) at an altitude of 1,212 meters. Such is the most unwinding forest trip in Dongyanshan National Forest Recreation Area, Taoyuan.
At a distance approximately one hour drive from Daxi, Dongyanshan National Forest Recreation Area used to be of the logging compartment of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency, leaving plenty of traces of forestry, such as yarders and forest nurseries. A Stone Monument for Silviculture stands at the entrance of Dongman Scenic Trail, a testimony to the forestry in Taiwan back in the day.
Dongyanshan enjoys quite a versatile ecology, being home to about 43 kinds of mountain birds, as well as a great number of mammals. Formosan White-faced Flying Squirrel from medium-high altitude can also be spotted here. Especially, there are many Formosan hares residing here as well. So watch out for what is next to your feet when you take a walk in the forest!
As for the Fossil Area beside the Dongyanshan Forest Trail, there are fossils and landscapes aged over tens of thousands of years, which makes it exceptionally valuable. If you have a chance to visit Daxi, perhaps plan for a trip to Dongyanshan National Forest Recreation Area, as well to cleanse your mind and soul in the forest!

園區步道
Self-guided trails
Source 林業署新竹分署
The self-guided trail is a circular trail leading to the top of Dongyan Mountain (1,212 meters). The trail can be entered from the back of the visitor center or the nature education center, and then exited from the restaurant. There are two main lines and a branch line, with a total length of about 4,130 meters. Since the altitude difference of the trail is about 300 meters, personal physical strength should be considered before climbing this trail. There are interpretation sign systems and viewing platforms along the trail, and you can follow the guidance of the interpretation leaflet to take a deep trip into the forest environment; in addition, there is a viewing platform at the triangulation point on the top of Dongyan Mountain (1,212 meters above sea level), where you can overlook the Taipei Basin (101 Building and Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Building, etc.), Taoyuan Terrace, Linkou Terrace and other geographical landscapes.

Scenic trails
Source 林業署新竹分署
The entrance to the scenic trail is located next to the visitor center. The entire trail is about 340 meters long. The scenic trail leads to the Triangle Point Observatory (1,212 meters above sea level). There are three routes leading to the geological corridor. At the end of the scenic trail is a small parking lot above the Dongyanshan Restaurant, which can be connected to the self-guided trail, the forest intellectual trail, and the parent-child peak trail. The artificial Cryptomeria trees are neatly arranged on both sides of the trail, making it a good place to enjoy the landscape of the artificial forest. There are rest pavilions and explanation signs along the way. It is recommended that you take an intellectual forest trip.

Forest Intellectual Trail
Source 林業署新竹分署
The Forest Intellectual Trail starts from the trail behind the restaurant to the Dongyanshan Forest Trail, a total of about 2,000 meters. The Intellectual Trail can lead to the Parent-Child Peak Trail and the Dongyanshan Forest Trail. On both sides of the trail, there are tools and equipment (trolleys, ropeways, slides, etc.) that were restored based on the early logging and timber collection methods, as well as hidden secret bases (if you want to know, you can join the courses at the Dongyanshan Nature Education Center~). Many animals hide in the Intellectual Trail. It is a good place to watch birds and observe the traces of wild boars rolling and digging in the ground. Keep your nose and ears open, or you may be lucky enough to smell the smell and call of mountain muntjacs (similar to dog barking).

Parent-Child Peak Trail
Source 林業署新竹分署
The Parent-Child Peak Trail is a circular trail that leads to the Parent-Child Peak. The starting and ending points of the trail are both located on the branch line of the Forest Intellectual Trail. The slope is relatively steep and the entire route is about 1,800 meters. The Parent-Child Peak Trail is mainly composed of artificial forest land and natural broad-leaved forest belts, with dense shade.

Dongman Trail (not the main trail in the park)
Source 林業署新竹分署
The hiking trail between Dongyan Mountain and Manyueyuan National Forest Recreation Area starts at the end of the geological corridor at an altitude of 870m, crosses the saddle between Beichatian Mountain and Dongyan Mountain at an altitude of 1,130m, and then goes straight down to the Manyueyuan Waterfall Area at an altitude of 500m; the main trail uses the former Taiwan carriage road and wooden horse trail, and then connects with the Manyueyuan to Beichatian Mountain hiking trail. The Castanopsis chinensis forest belt is a medium-to-low altitude evergreen broad-leaved forest. Along the way, coniferous and broad-leaved trees are intertwined, and the forest is dense, breeding a rich variety of birds and insects. In addition to the natural landscapes such as cloud waterfalls, streams, and waterfalls, it is a pleasant hiking trail in northern Taiwan in all seasons.

The fossil area mainly displays traces left by shrimps and crabs when they built burrows about 30 million years ago. They are of great value and can serve as the basis for the study of Taiwan's geological evolution.

Geological corridor
Source Forestry and Conservation Department Hsinchu Branch
Shortly after entering the park from the Dongyanshan Ticket Management Station, you can see the control point of the Geological Corridor (formerly known as the Dongyanshan Gravel Forest Road). The early development of the geological corridor was to facilitate the transportation of timber. Nowadays, except for official vehicles, other vehicles are not allowed to enter due to restrictions. Therefore, it has become another hiking route in the Dongyanshan National Forest Recreation Area. The Dongyanshan Forest Road leads to the trailhead and afforestation memorial stone of the Dongman Trail. Along the way, you can overlook the nearby mountains and artificial afforestation areas at places with wide views. If you are lucky, you can see the unique cloud waterfall of Dongyanshan in the cherry blossom viewing area in February. The famous fossil landscape of Dongyanshan can also be seen along the Dongyanshan Forest Road and in the fossil area. There are several rest pavilions and 2 toilets along the Dongyanshan Forest Trail, providing you with the option of taking a short break while walking.
