Taipingshan Forest Recreation Area

Bong Bong Train, hot spring, mountain lakes, Giant Tree forest and national treasure, Taiwan Beech, have paved the long track of history of Taipingshan (Peace Mountain) National Forest Recreation Area for over a century.
With an elevation of 1,950 meters, Taipingshan is a forestry legend second only to Alishan. Since 1915, the Japanese started the logging business here, taken over by the nationalist government later on. It thus became the largest forest station in Taiwan, and was ultimately transformed into a recreational area in 1983, leaving precious historical sites such as the Jiancing Historic Trail and Bong Bong Train behind.
Taipingshan was formerly referred to as “Minnao”, meaning a dense and flourishing forest.
Visitors can stroll amidst the virgin forest at the back of Zhen’an Temple, and set free their minds to roam back to the age when Giant Trees stood throughout the mountain. Driving through the Cueifong Forest Road, on which one often encounters wildlife like Taiwan macaque and Mikado Pheasant, you will arrive at the largest mountain lake in Taiwan: Cueifong Lake, at an altitude of 1,840 meters. On the far end of the lake is home to the national treasure, Taiwan Beech. One may take a walk on the 4-km trail in autumn to appreciate the mountain covered in gold.
Not far from the Ticket Station is Jioujhihze Hot Spring, a well-known carbon dioxide spring, another major feature around here. Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area is no doubt the prime choice for any nature lover who pays a visit to Yilan.

Cueifong Lake
Featured Landscape
Cueifong Lake

Cueifong Lake is the largest alpine lake in Taiwan, extending over 25 hectares when filled by the autumn rains. During the dry season, the lake recedes to a gourd shape, the edges of which are green with water plants. The view becomes even more attractive in spring when the wildflowers bloom. In late autumn to early winter, the lake attracts wintering birds from the north, their calls adding to the chorus of the already vociferous resident species. When the mist and fog spread over the water's surface, visitors might easily feel as if they have stepped into a fairytale scene. The lakeside area is currently off limits to visitors due to ecological restoration work. However, visitors may still enjoy the view from the observation platform and along the Cueifong Lake and Taiwan Beech trails. The latter is especially beautiful in mid-November when the trees don their autumn hues.
Bailing Giant Tree
Featured Landscape
Bailing Giant Tree
The most famous tourist attraction here is a giant tree. Bailing giant tree is a gigantic Taiwan Cypress about 30 m high (roughly 10 floors) and more than 2,500 years old. It takes 6 persons to encircle its trunk. It had been struck by lightning and its trunk is hollow inside. Even so, it is still alive and continuing to grow. By the way, Bailing is also the demarcation between broadleaf trees and conifer trees.

Cueifong Scenic Road starts from a fork in the road leading to Taipingshan Villa and Cueifong Lake separately. Its total length is16.5 km. It used to be a forest railway and later was turned into a forest road by removing tracks and enlarging lane width. In 2004, more construction had been undertaken and the road was renamed “Cueifong Scenic Road”. It is the only road to Cueifong Lake, National Taiwan Beech Trail and Cueifong Villa

Bong Bong Train
As the orange-yellow colored Bong Bong train moving slowly along the slope and heading to Maosing Station, it will make the peculiar sound of“Bong Bong”resonating in the valley, which is the reason why people give the name to it. On the Bong Bong train, you can find various wild flowers, like Gleichenia japonica, Unigemmate China Fern and Common Foxglove, swung in the wind on your right and a broad view of mountains on your left. Both in good weather and in foggy days, the views you see from the Bong Bong Train are like picturesque paintings.

Jhongjian Visitors Center
At the visitor center, the exhibition pavilion and multimedia room introduce the beauty and history of Taipingshan to visitors at the first hand. Outside the visitor center building, there is a steam-skidder displayed which was used to pull cut log by steel cable in early days. It was an indispensable tool for forestry. Besides, there is a 110-m long trail meandering between Japanese cedars, where is an ideal location for stretching your legs or taking a break after many hours driving.
Jioujhihze Hot Spring
Park Facilities
Jioujhihze Hot Spring
Jioujhihze used to be called “Shozui”(indicating the hot spring)by the locals. Under the Japanese administration, Japanese loggers built a hot spring bath room here and bathing in the hot spring became a precious enjoyment in logger's life. Japanese called the hot spring “Hadonozawa“(????) and later its name was changed into“Zenze”in 1969. It was not until 2006 that its original name was restored.

Taipingshan Villa is managed by Yilan Branch, Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency. It used to be the administration center of Taipingshan Forest Farm. This is the place where most of the Recreation Area's facilities and managing offices are situated. The villa is built on a slope and its buildings are divided by the central stairway. It is constantly surrounded by clouds and fogs so that it looks much like a small town high above in the sky.

Cueifong Villa was built in 1987 and underwent a renovation from Oct. 2005 until 2008. The new Cueifong Villa incorporated the concept of “smooth dialogue between the interior and the exterior”, ”expanding the interior into the nature while introducing the nature into the interior” and “creating a scene surrounded by Mother Nature” into its building process and reopened in 2008.
