The Alishan Ecocenter is located within the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area, but its conservation concerns include the Taiwan Orchid Nature Reserve, Tashan Wildlife Important Habitat, and Lulinshan Wildlife Important Habitat. The staff of the Forestry and Conservation Administration's Alishan Station have long been involved in environmental monitoring and resource surveys in the surrounding protected areas. In addition, they have also carried out habitat restoration work for Alishan Salamander and Taiwan Orchid, which has been quite effective over the years. In order to let the public understand the importance of habitat environment and species conservation in protected areas, the conservation species - Alishan Salamander and Taiwan Orchid are used as the main theme of the story hall to explain the implementation process and results of the research work to the public.
In order to promote the concept of nature conservation and let tourists understand the natural ecology of Alishan, the Chiayi Branch of the Forestry and Conservation Administration used the old Alishan Station and other old buildings to replan and renovate the Alishan Ecological Education Center, Taiwan Orchid Ecological Story Hall, and Alishan Salamander Hall.
