To keep the island from being isolated and strengthen its economic and military ties, the Qing Dynasty began building 8 Cross-mountain trails between 1874 and 1895, the Hengchun Beinan Historic Trail was one of them.
The rebuilt Hengchun Beinan Historic Trail offers smooth traffic. A board section is available from Baoli, Houdong all the way east to Shemali after crossing the mountains. Even ox carts were allowed. In the Qing Dynasty, the trail served as a major cross-island road. Besides, the Historic Trail had mail services for travelers.
The good years of the Historic Trail remained until the 11th and 12th years of Guangshu of the Qing Dynasty, when the Santiaolun Beinan was inaugurated. From that on, people traveling east would take Dongang or Fangliao highway. With new highways, this part of the trail gave way to modern highways.
