There are mostly landscape plantations in the Chihnan forest district, while in papaya District No. 98, there are more natural forests with a small area of plantation. The plantation species are mostly Formosan Ash, Zelkova, and Camphors. The natural species are subtropical trees such as Camphors and Moraceae including the representative Ficus irisana, Ficus nervosa, Siebold Ardisia, Common Elaeocarp, Common Tree Fern and Pine Fern.. In the Chihnan area, Swinhoe's Japalura can be sighted on tree trunks. There are many birds like the Taiwanese Bulbul, Streak- breasted Scimitar Babbler, and Tailed Shrike. Carp Lake is a paradise for waterfowl such as the Eastern Marsh Harrier. There are 69 varieties of butterflies in 8 families, with an impressive number of Red Pieris.
Chihnan was a transfer point for timber production in the early days, and is the starting point of the Halun cable track for logging operations along the Papaya Hill. Therefore, it is very valuable to preserve the cultural and historical traces, such as the wood horses, winch, wooden chute, and tram. The exhibitions of the steam locomotive, fuel locomotive, transportation machinery and ruins have been in service for decades. These traces allow visitors to experience the hard times of forest operations. A 200-meter “bouncing railroad” has been preserved so that visitors can experience the life of early forestry workers. In order to explain the past history of forestry, there is a forestry museum with an audio-video room and a showroom that introduces the many objectives of forest management and forest ecology, displays a variety of the original logging tools such as ax and saws, and compares them to modern ones. Since Chihnan is a place with more complete historical logging relics, a visit to Chihnan will bring visitors satisfaction in both cultural and natural understanding.
Carp Lake beyond this area is under the management of East Rift Valley National Scenic Area Administration. Biking along the lake, rowing, firefly-touring in the spring and summer, and enjoying a taste of local flavors are all attractions that visitors should be sure to try.
